Students will learn how to think in “Aesthetic Categories.”
After an introductory presentation to explain painting principles and procedures necessary for successful painting, Mike will do a demonstration illustrating the principles explained. The first student activity will be a paint along using the same photo source as Mike demos. Students will complete two paint alongs in the first day and a half before working on scenes from their own photo references. Throughout the week, he will have short presentations on choosing good photo resources and editing them, on measuring techniques, and on mastering perspective, values and color.
Mike is going to make many resources available to workshop participants, some provided prior to the workshop: a one-hour video on his 7 principles of painting; exclusive access to a 3-part video on how Mike prepares his limited palette for oil painting; and a PDF pastel painting lesson for beginners and suggestions for organizing pastels prior to the workshop. Demos will be videoed and some of these will be available exclusively to students following the workshop. Each student will receive a newly edited and updated workbook that covers material presented at the workshop. Mike’s systematic approach will free you to be more spontaneous while still in control of your painting.
