Hannah Dean

Delight in Acrylic Expressionism and Abstraction

Media: Acrylic all levels

Dates: July 29-August 2, 2024

Cost: $300 + $50

Cloudcroft Art Workshops is proud to present one of Cloudcroft’s very own artists, Hannah Celeste Dean, with her broad experience in creating art and in teaching. She will inspire you to take your art into your own expression.

In this 5-day workshop, you will look at works by innovative abstraction artists throughout art history like Hilma Af Klint, Mark Rothko, Willem de Kooning, Georgia O’Keeffe, Bridget Riley and more. Drawing inspiration from the way these masters use the elements of art: color, shape, line, value, texture, and space; you will create harmonious compositions full of meaning and mood, whether depicting representational imagery or a pure celebration of the expressive elements of art. You will focus on various techniques to achieve one (or more) rich and well developed acrylic abstract paintings.

Hannah will demonstrate both abstracted representational imagery (working from a still-life or portrait) and non-representational abstract expressionist-style work for this course. Students are encouraged to bring an object or photograph that they would like to work from or draw inspiration from. You may also work through pure technique and draw inspiration from a song or other non-visual source. She will work with each student to develop their image and style.

Each student will develop their art under Hannah’s attention and guidance in creating their colors and values from a minimal palette.

Hannah moved to Cloudcroft nearly five years ago with her husband and daughter. Hannah has participated in and contributed her many talents to the Cloudcroft community with art classes and involvement in the school activities. You may see her murals in Artesia the Cloudcroft Elementary school library. She has even reflected her art on some of our famous dumpsters.

She is a painter and regularly contributes writing to the Texas-based online arts magazine, Glasstire. Previously, she taught beginning and advanced Drawing, Design, and Painting courses as an Associate Professor of Art and at Texas Tech University and Lubbock Christian University. She attained her Bachelor of Education from LCU and her MFA from TTU.

Her works are seen in Charles Adams Gallery in Lubbock and Aspen & Ivy in Cloudcroft. Originals and prints are available through Saatchi Art online and Anthropologie retailers. Her work has been featured in many national and global juried exhibitions and publications.
